In less than a 15 minutes ride from the center of Málaga you will find the area Los Molinos de San Telmo. Here you will start the Sendero Picapedreros Trail and you will walk through the mountainous Montes de Málaga Natural Park. It is a wonderfully quiet area where you can enjoy beautiful landscapes, great views and beautiful nature. If you go out early, the sun will magically shine through the trees and the birds will start chirping.

During the hike you walk along olive and eucalyptus trees, on wide forest roads and narrow steep paths through the pine forests. And for a moment it felt like we were back in Ronda, but without tourists. You can spot a hidden gem along the way; the remains of the San Telmo aqueduct from 1780! This aqueduct used to have an important task. It provided the supply of drinking water to Málaga.

Montes de Málaga has not always been so green. Between the 15th and 20th centuries, many trees were felled to create olive groves and vineyards. Due to the extensive deforestation, the villages and towns in the area regularly flooded. That is why it was decided in 1930 to restore the area through reforestation.

Tip: Do you have a dog that is active and who likes to go on an adventure? Then this is a very nice walk to do together. There are plenty of squirrels to run after and discover new scents! We had Cassie with us, Danique’s sister’s dog. And she’s a fashion model isn’t she?!

Practical information

The approximately 2.5-hour hike is 7 kilometers long and has a low difficulty level. But you will pass a number of challenging parts where you have to climb a lot. So we advise you to put on suitable shoes.

Accessibility

By taxi or Uber you stop in front of the entrance gate of the natural park. A ride from the center of Málaga costs about €15. If you go by car you can park near Los Molinos de San Telmo. From the parking lot it is about a 10-minute walk to the starting point of the hike.
