Hallstatt is often considered one of the most beautiful villages in Austria. And that is certainly right! We fell in love with this village. It is magical, idyllic and almost too good to be true. The clouds of fog hanging over the village that day made it mysterious and we were excited to explore Hallstatt. The colorful houses are built against a steep rocky mountain and the village is surrounded by high mountains and a green / blue lake, called the Hallstättersee. Unfortunately, Hallstatt its beauty also has a downside. The small village is overrun by tourists. If you want to avoid these and experience how Hallstatt can be Hallstatt for a while, there are a few things to keep in mind.
# 1 Get up early
Many day trips to Hallstatt are organized. So make sure you have discovered most of Hallstatt before 11am. After that, the first tourists will arrive by tour bus or boat. We arrived there around half past seven in the morning so we had enough time to discover the village. Hallstatt awakens, gradually all shops open and the locals prepare for another busy day.
The advantages of going out early is that you can enjoy the beautiful viewpoints without selfie sticks in the picture. You can also spot all kinds of animals that only pay attention to you. Charming swans like to swim with you, all kinds of birds fly back and forth and cats come to cuddle with you.
# 2 Go by car
In the past, you could only reach Hallstatt by boat, but later a road has been built and you can reach it easily and quickly by car. Therefore, visit Hallstatt by car. This way you can determine the time yourself and you still have a spot in the parking lot that is only a 5 to 10 minute walk away.
# 3 Respect the rules
To maintain peace in the town, you must respect the wishes of the residents and the municipality. For example, you should not fly a drone, you should behave calmly, so that the residents experience as little inconvenience as possible and you have to take the privacy of the people into account. So don’t just go into someones garden.
